Anyha Spotlight: Learning to Communicate

“I get to work on myself mentally and physically, talk to people, and learn communication skills.”  – Anyha Temple, Strength Ambassador

Hi Guys. My name is Anyha Temple. I’m 18, and I’m a Strength Ambassador here at MissionFit. I started here in 2023. It was awkward in the beginning because I didn’t know anyone, but as soon as I walked in, it was positive and welcoming. Coach Wes started to make me feel like I wanted to come back to do check-ins with the group, meaning checking in with everybody, rating how you feel on a scale of 1-10, and picking a word to describe how you felt mentally. Every day I came in here, there was a great positive attitude and it quickly became my second home.

I get to work on myself mentally and physically, talk to people, and learn communication skills. Sometimes, when I communicate, I stutter because I still feel nervous about coaching, but I can improve by getting more practice in projecting my voice and leading workouts independently.

Communication was hard for me for a long time because I was scared. I didn’t talk to anyone, not even my family. It got better when I talked with Coach Wes about communication and he told me to “think about how you want to represent yourself while talking to other people.” We did a journal prompt explaining how to be when we’re coaching. A couple of suggestions that stuck with me were always to make sure people are engaged in the workout and never to sit down as a coach, or else people will think you’re not paying attention. I also learned it’s best to observe your clients on what workouts and warmups they need help on. Not paying attention can lead to serious injuries and consequences.

Still, to this day, I get this nervous feeling in my gut when I’m speaking, but at the end of the day, I am able to project my voice and make others feel like they’re having fun and wanting to come back.
