The Power of Storytelling for Positive Youth Development

Storytelling is an art form that can help our youth develop their minds in positive ways. When telling a story, especially about your experience, it helps the details to sink in, and creates confidence around communication and identity. When youth are growing from one life cycle to the next, their experiences solidify in their minds, and teaching them the importance of communicating these experiences helps them develop some important qualities as they grow.

Relationship Building

Our teens are developing their sense of self, and storytelling can help them become better listeners, planners, and to gain perspectives outside of their own. As they learn to tell their own stories, they learn to listen to those of others. They can empathize better when they’ve shared and allowed their feelings to sink in about an experience, and then recognize similar feelings in others. This development of social responsibility can positively affect their growth into more well-rounded individuals.

Fosters Creativity and Imagination

Storytelling also encourages development in creativity and imagination. When telling a story, the storyteller must focus on event descriptions and characteristics to help the audience understand how they were feeling in the moment, or why they’d chosen to act the way they did in a given setting. Sharing in this way creates space for creative, and open-minded thinking.

Encourages Confidence

Growing comfortable with communicating in front of others sets a strong foundation for confident communication in other areas of life. Storytelling can encourage our young people to connect with others through strong communication and build their confidence in doing so. This can also have the side effect of encouraging better communication between friends and within team settings, making for better team players.
