In order to set goals, you first have to know what your goals will be. Where do you want to go, and what steps will you need to take to get there? Think of something that will make you feel happy and fulfilled. Close your eyes and picture yourself having achieved this goal. Now, work backward and ask yourself what you can do to make it a reality.

Implementing SMART goals is one way to increase your chances of success. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-frame specific. Rather than say, “I’m going to work hard to improve my fitness,” for example, try this: “I’m going to start working out three times a week and try a group fitness class.”

Once you have your goals in mind, write them down. Those who write down their goals are 20% more likely to accomplish them. Why? It makes your goals feel less like idle dreams and more like concrete plans.

 

How Can Others Help You with Your Goals?

The next step in goal-setting is to share your goals with a friend, a loved one or someone in the community. This accomplishes two things. One: speaking your goals aloud is another way to make them feel tangible and realistic. Two: it holds you accountable. Ask a friend to check in with you regularly to track your progress. The power of having someone ask you “What did you do to improve your fitness this week?” will surprise you.

Again, consider the importance of specificity. How will this person get in touch with you, and how often?
