The Power of Play and its Impact on Youth

We always strive to create an environment that welcomes youth throughout the city of Baltimore into a space where they can escape the hurried lifestyle of today and simply play! However, we also understand that the role of physical recreation is much more profound than having a good time for a few hours each day. Play is essential for developing the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of youth. Without the proper balance of work and play, studies show that deficiencies in each of these areas are likely to begin creeping in.

So, let’s make sure we play hard this summer! Here are a few ways MissionFit is ensuring that recreation and community remains a point of emphasis for Baltimore youth this summer.

 

Rise Up and Ride Out (RURO)

RURO is a project spearheaded by a team of three youth-centered nonprofits: BYKE, Corner Team, and MissionFit. We’re working together this summer to provide a health and wellness program for Baltimore City youth.

We believe that achieving health and wellness requires individuals to define goals in respect to physical fitness, social awareness, and emotional control. Our comprehensive program is designed to promote autonomy by encouraging attendees and instilling transferable life skills. Using the tools of bike mechanics, physical strength, boxing, and mentorship, we’re looking forward to helping create pathways for social-emotional development and valuable life skills.

 

Strength Ambassadors Program

Strength Ambassadors participate in cooking, meal planning, meditation, yoga, along with Coaching 101. Through these activities, they build healthy habits, employment readiness, and knowledge of personal fitness and training. Moreover, they learn the facilitation skills to bring their knowledge to their friends and family. Together, we develop exercise and coaching skills, and then have the opportunity to practice those skills live with groups of Youth Members to develop capacity in public speaking, group facilitation, and leadership.
