How MissionFIt Positively Impacts Mental Health in Baltimore

There is so much going on in the world today, and it’s only expected that the myriad of current events unfolding across the world are impacting each of us in unique ways. Today’s youth is faced with a series of new challenges and hurdles to overcome seemingly each day. In this blog, we’ll outline common stressors that Baltimore’s youth grapples with, and how MissionFit is working to offer the help and support they need to overcome these stressors.
Depression
Depression is an issue that has always been present in youth, but the subject is becoming less taboo as time goes on. There are many reasons why youth may suffer with depression, including loneliness/ isolation that has occurred because of social distancing measures and self-worth struggles that can develop after extended usage of social media.
Regardless of what triggers have led to the development of depression, it’s important to seek professional help to receive the right treatment. At MissionFIt, we focus on inspiring practical life changes, including an increased emphasis on diet and exercise, as these changes have also been demonstrated to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation.
Academic Pressure
As a whole, Gen Z seems to be taking a studious approach to their education compared to past generations. Even still, attendance and drop out records remain an issue throughout the city of Baltimore. Perhaps the culmination of academic pressure and pressure outside of school is contributing to the city’s struggle with attendance. In any case, our facility serves as a break from that pressure, as we strive to provide our city’s youth with the skills to take ownership of their mental health and offer support from our positive community.
Bullying/ Peer Pressure
Bullying and peer pressure are two more challenges that have existed forever, and they’re now magnified after the school day ends with the popularization of social media amongst teens. Simultaneously, simply staying off social media altogether can put these teens at a social disadvantage.
MissionFit is a safe space from the challenges, covered in this blog, as we have created an environment designed to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie to everyone who walks through our doors. In addition to physical exercise, we also strive to promote gratitude throughout our organization through the practice of gratitude circles. In gratitude circles, our coaches and youth each share one thing they are grateful for that day to establish a positive perspective. Check out this footage of a gratitude circle in action! Its sure to bring a smile to your face.
