Life Lessons and the Gym

Spending time at the gym doesn’t need to be boring, miserable or frustrating. Instead, it can be liberating, empowering and a great way to spend an afternoon or evening. For kids and teens, the gym is an important place that can play a critical role in learning important life lessons, like those listed below.

It’s Okay to Make a Mistake

Whether playing a game with friends or trying to hone a skill, there are many times mistakes can happen in the gym. Through playing team sports and other gym activities, kids learn that it’s okay to make mistakes as long as you use them as learning opportunities. In fact, failure is key to growth. Our Coaches will help push your child to learn, and let them know that mistakes and failures are essential on the pathway to growth and success.

How to Be a Leader and a Follower

Through working out at the gym with friends, kids and teens learn how to be both a leader and a follower. Leadership is an essential skill that everyone should develop. When youth are placed in a positive environment and allowed to try their hand at leadership, they gain confidence and comfort in guiding others.

Time at the gym also is an opportunity to learn how to be a follower. While leadership is important, it is just as essential to learn how to be led by others. Having a coach and positive role model is like having a boss in some ways. Coaches offer instruction, praise and constructive guidance. Learning how to follow gives teens the chance to hone their listening skills, treat adult figures with respect and have patience if they disagree.

Setting and Achieving Goals

Goals are critical in every aspect of life, from setting performance guidelines at work to achieving personal fitness benchmarks. The gym, and structured programs like those offered at MissionFit, give kids and teens the chance to set goals, create benchmarks along the way and experience the exhilaration that comes with achievement. Over the years, kids also see the amazing progress that can come from setting numerous smaller goals that lead to huge accomplishments.
