You know who doesn’t fall to the Appeal to Tradition otherwise known as argumentum ad antiquitatem? Young people.
You very rarely hear them saying, “But that’s the way it’s always been done”. However, in Baltimore in particular, we do see generations starting to let hopelessness creep in, as they see the humans close to them being beat down by “the way it is”.
In just the way that we all should do more often, they are easily capable of questioning why something is the way it is, and even more open to suggesting that we change it. There is no attachment because everything is new to them. The only thing is… they have older humans telling them “that’s just the way it is”.
At MissionFit, some of the conversations we have are about not reacting negatively to factors we can’t change, and realizing what variables are in our control even when they do not initially present themselves that way.
What thoughts or beliefs are you clinging to that might be harmful to you, your community, or our world? How can your language and leadership present more opportunities to the future of Baltimore instead of less?
